So this is what bands mean by that difficult second album !

Write ur Blog, or else !

Avoidance – The first blog is easy, who I am, what I am doing, what I am going to write about, this second one you will notice is late, 5 days late, but the good news is that I know why ! Its week four of my first college semester and the workload sneaks up on you like an uppercut, when you were expecting a jab ! This kind of workload can become disabling while you are getting to grips with it, it’s a mental thing. The blog entry is a bit like that, if you don’t know what you are going to write, you end up writing nothing ! If you think that you will sit down every Thursday and think up an award winning blurb, then it’s over before it began.

Realisation – Now it makes sense to me why a Blog is so important. From a business point of view Google search results ranking depend heavily on your website having fresh content. It’s very easy to put together a good site, designing it so that the maintenance will be minimal and cheap. Downside to that is fairly soon the Google spiders, as well as your potential customers will see that nothing has changed. Impression is a site that’s stale / inactive, and that’s the impression they will get of your company. The website is your shop window so things like plugs in of your Twitter and Facebook feeds to your homepage are very important. A blog on your site is a great way to incorporate fresh content. It’s helpful to get you higher on search engine result pages, gives clients valuable info. on relevant issues and builds yourself some valuable deposits in the professional credibility bank.

Reality – Talk to any business owner who started blogging, only to stop after a few entries and they will tell you the reason was lack of time. I think why so many blogs start with great intentions and soon get dumped into the single entry graveyard, is just simply they had no plan. This is coming with experience and of course experience is something you usually have when it’s too late ! If you are considering a blog for your business then here is one golden nugget before you begin, PLAN IT BEFORE YOU WRITE IT !

Don't waste time, plan it !

Location – Either have the Blog on your site or have a feed from a blogging platform. I use but whatever platform you use type it into Youtube’s search page and watch the tutorial video’s on how to. Otherwise get a pro to set it up for you so that you can add new entries simply by e-mail.

The Plan – Blogging is a campaign, not an advert. Write the plan on a spreadsheet or word document. In column A put down the weekly date for the next 52 weeks that you will post and entry. In column B write down a title for each weekly entry covering 52 for a year, consider your target audience and what they will want to hear. This exercise is just taking your profession and splitting it out into its various parts. It also takes into account seasonal topics. Once you have this down then just have a set structure to each blog. Title, intro, 2 to 3 pieces of info with examples and links and photo’s / video’s, features and benefits, summary. Six paragraphs, a hundred words or so each, job done.

The Reward – If you can plan the Blog correctly, then there will be a logical flow to the subject matter it covers each week. The better the plan, better the content, better the read, more followers, more website hits, higher Google ranking, increased profile and potential for more customers. Most businesses don’t blog regularly so if you do then you will be one valuable step ahead.

Get Followers – There is no point in having the Worlds best blog if no one is reading it ! So once you are up and running visit this link here.

Just write one line !

What’s in it for me ? – Well apart from the obvious business advantages of Blogging you will soon find that it is a form of self education ! By writing in the various subjects that your business is made up of, it will help you to spot areas that you may want to concentrate on. It will also highlight the areas you are most passionate about. These are the ones you may place more focus on and probably prove most successful at. Finally remember, when you are putting off writing that weekly ( or daily ) post, just sit down and write the first line, the rest will write itself !

Intelligence Warning ! …

From the title of my first weekly blog of about thirty I aim to post, you might guess that this is not going to be written by a long standing I.T. genius !

The Content promise !…

Firstly I am going to tell you a little bit on what this blog will be about. Also a little bit about it’s author, who I am, what I have been doing up to now and what you can expect to read about here over the coming weeks. What I hope to deliver is first and foremost something worth reading, something relevant. A helpful blog that everyone from those with a passing interest to industry professionals will all find it worth the 5 minutes !

The Aspiration !…

I read a few blogs but the one’s I love are the ones that I enjoy and can understand easily. The blog’s that are entertaining while at the same time useful and informative. This is what I aim to achieve.

The guy tapping the keys !…

So who am I, well in the 90’s I did my leaving cert and like a lot of adults looking back I realise I had no real idea what I wanted to do. At 17 and having no experience of the working world I made a largely uneducated choice about my future career from a background of only vaguely related education. I studied Manufacturing Technology and then switched to Equine Science. In truth I was not suited to either. While I did like the Equine science I had no aptitude for Biology or Chemistry. So I did like Steve Jobs rip who passed away today and dropped out of college.

The Jobs !…

After a brief, unsuccessful but nonetheless enjoyable stint as an amateur Jump Jockey I returned home to Cork working in my fathers retail business. I then worked in Black Tie, Super Valu, Masterfoods, Costcutter, then ran a Mace supermarket for a year before joining Eircom for the past decade while part time helping to expand a fitness company. So my career went from retail assistant to trainee manager to sales merchandiser, sales representative, regional manager, business owner, business developer, account manager, reseller trainer, small fitness business expansion and operations manager. To sum up in three words, service, sales and marketing.

The Gamble !…

Then I realised that after attending a series of DCU Techspectations seminars that if I was to stay ahead of the game in the professional world of Sales and Marketing I would have to leave it, in the middle of a recession ! Temporarily of course, and now I am a student again, attending the one year Graduate Certificate programme in Digital Marketing at Dublin City University Sep 2011 to May 2012. When I realised that 64% of all sales start with a query on a search engine I realised I was in a fight holding a pen knife when what I really needed was a machine gun ! In the experience I gained putting together the website for the fitness business I knew this was the area of business I wanted to be in.

The Blog readers !…

This series of posts should appeal to a varied audience, as it will cover the latest teachings from the leading online marketing and e commerce University programmes in the country. The University that conducts more online marketing campaigns than any digital agency. The course with more leading industry guest speakers from around the globe than the leading conferences. So whether you are an online e commerce professional, web design house, marketing agency, small business owner, budding entrepreneur or prospective student I aim to provide a synopsis of my forthcoming education topics. Combined with real world applications, examples and results there will be something for everyone, including for me as I will be inviting opinions, experiences and feedback to enhance the quality of the readers and my experience.

The subject matter !…

While the course is entitled Digital Marketing it really is all about Customer Engagement and Interaction. Talking to them and getting them to talk back to you.

The first part of the course will include 10, yes 10 projects and around 100 Journal readings up to Dec 2011, goodbye daylight ! Three of the projects are ;

1. Search Engine Optimisation of an existing website, 2. Planning and execution of a Twitter campaign promoting an online service 3. A Google+ diary documenting an eight week experience in an online consumption based community / forum.

As well as the projects, I will be studying and blogging about ;
Online Reputation Management

Twitter, Facebook, Hootsuite, Social Network Marketing

The Digital Consumer + Consumer Behaviour

E-Mail Marketing

Google Tools for Marketing

So like the Late Late there will be something for everyone in the audience but hopefully far more entertaining and worthwhile viewing ! See you next week, D
